| I AM BUMPING THIS THREAD.
I started this thread on November 6th, 2007. Tonight I was shown that the time is upon us. Please store food. You do not want to be standing in a rationing line. The shelves will be bare. - Spring Miracles wrote:
- I have been feeling this for quite some time, and telling all close to me that we are getting ready to experience a major worldwide recession/depression. Well I am feeling the urgency of this now. Something huge is brewing to bring the U.S. economy to a screeching halt. It is going to be many things brought upon us to bear that will materialize into unbounded proportions. It is not just the housing bust we are seeing.
I am feeling this will be within a year's time frame, but it may be closer than this. It is going to hit suddenly and many will not be prepared.
I am feeling a food shortage coming soon. Prices will skyrocket and very little products will be on the shelves. Please start preparing. This is not going to be an easy time to get food. At least stock some canned foods and water. This is extremely important. I feel rationing will be taking place.
I hope this does not come to light, but I am feeling this has to come to fruition.

| Little Fire I went to Costco (Like a Sam's Club) and the beans and rice shelves were empty! Seems everybody is either stocking up or there really is a shortage.
Another thing that is bothering me is the fact that we seem to be having more health threats with the fresh produce. For example the tomato recall and scare with the salmonella poisoning.
I stocked up on tomato sauce and paste. You can always heat it up and pour it over spaghetti or noodles. It is a great source of potassium.
When we cannot get fresh we will need as many sources of vitamins and minerals as we can get.

| I hear you Spring! I went to this fresh produce market (it is a chain store here in Canada called Farm Boy) and I bought a head of cabbage, let me tell you, it wasn't one of the healthiest looking one, and that was the best out of the entire bunch!
But other shelves were not as full as normal either. Remember that with with the rising oil prices, not only does it affect us the consumers, but it affects the farmers, the truckers, the packaging and processing plants as well.
And you are right with the recent scare of the Tomatoes, and also all the flooding occuring worldwide... the prices of food will sky rocket and have a shortage.
Start saving your seeds as well and please consider planting if you haven't done it this year, you will notice you will have no choice next year...

| You are so right, Littlefire. Seeds, seeds you can sprout----all the legumes, grains, including of course clover, alfalfa, cabbage family vegies make for good sprouts, too. SPROUTS AND POTATOES ARE IT!!!!! (OK, cukes and apples----there is a cucumber tree! Really. And there is also squashes (don't eat potatoe or squash family sprouts---they're toxic. Any of the tuberous vegies make sense, too, ie., if the water table is still available..... | |

| Here is something else to raise the stakes. Feed corn prices have almost doubled just in the last six months, the price should go above $15 dollar a bushell if not higher by spring. America will have to cut back on cattle production because there will not be enough feed this time next year at the current production levels. So, looks like we get more chickens here on the farm and will have too suplement their diet. Cerial will be around $10.00 a box by next summer. Not a pretty picture, but always optimistic. | |

| BTM, The reason there was no ramon noodle is because I bought them all up Lol. Last time I went to Sam's Club, I bought another 250 lbs of rice and two skids of ramon noodle. the amaising thing was the kid at checkout asked me if I herd about the rice shortage, Duh!
Just keep looking, you will find what you need. Buy any dry noodles that you can and stock up on tomato sause and spices, boulion cubes, anything that can change the flavor of what you are cooking. If you cannot find beans or oats in the store, go to your local feed supply store and buy in 50 lbs bags.
I have been putting everything up, not for just my family, but for those around me that either did not bother, or could not afford to.

| Hello Spring, Your feelings on all of this are true and right on the money, we are now starting to here the grumblings of what is to come. We don't realize what we have until we cannot attain it anymore. Times like these bring out the best and the worst in people, I can only hope that we can still treat each other with compassion as we go through these troubled times, and share what you have and extend that loving hand to those that need our help. I have been through many trying times where we all had to band together to make it through, but there are always a few people that think of no one but their self, and will have to live with that shame. | |

| Little fire and Wild Dove, You both have the right idea, stock up on what you can and start buying seeds. I keep a revolving stock of seeds and buy in bulk. I am looking at seeds for next years stock to add to the seeds I already have. You can keep seeds for around 7 years, but usually don't degrade in germinating untill you get past five years, some will last even longer. I have had two year old seeds that did not even germinate, I think they were repackaged. A good stock up would be around 600 packs of seeds to include herbs and flowers. The seeds are not very expensive, 2008 seeds are ready for purchase.. | |

| I have plenty of seeds, my problem is I CAN'T PLANT THEM!!! too much rain. I did manage to get some in containers, my dogs knocked over my watermelon I got planted the same day I planted them (IN $15.00 worth of organic potting soil!!) they did sprout though so maybe I will get lucky and have a watermelon or two this summer. I've been trying to stock up and end up having to tap into my stores because I can't afford too many groceries sometimes. I feel like I'm in a catch 22 situation sometimes. i do know in my heart though that I will be okay and everything will work out. | |

| Osiris you are blessed to understand and see what is going on around us. I talk to some and they just do not see it. They are going on with their little worlds and do not believe that we will be besieged by a massive food shortage.
Of course they are feeling the effects of the price of gasoline, but that is because it is immediate and something that has slapped them in the face.
Our government will not be able to help when the real impact hits. Canned food is essential now. You do not want to be standing in a rationing line, or going to the store and the shelves are bare. I can see the first effects now.
You are right about the price of cereal. Grains will be one of the first items to take a big hit.
I hope to be able to help others when the severity of this hits. I am trying every week to stock something.
Does anybody know how long pasta will store? I usually put it in Zip Locks and then in a heavy plastic container with bay leaves in it.

| MID, this may sound silly, "if hydroponics works (growing food in air/water instead of soil, maybe there is a site that offers individual hydroponic kits for small production?"
Osiris, thank you. I never stop "preachin' about my $69.95 hydrator I bought online from qfc shopping network. It really works. Absolutely anything dries in it (dries below 200 degrees, thus does not kill essential enzymes that re-activate when re-soaking them, or simply chewing them, reactivating with one's own saliva....your other point well taken....about flavor. The American Heart Association used to sell a fairly large can of natural non-salt seasoning herbs, not to expensive, or there is "Spike" seasoning, also---a bit expensive, but well worth it. Salt is essential in preservation. After all, it is the original preservation technique humans have always used. The more we add to the arsenal of survival techniques, the better "armed" we will be.......

| Wild Dove hydroponics is an excellent idea, I kinda forgot about it. I'm pretty sure there are places to buy home kits, I think I've run across some in the past. Spring, pasta lasts a long time if it is stored well. I'm always preachin' about Tupperware, but, hey it works. I use a lot of glass jars also. I found some rubbermaid gallon and half gallon storage cannisters at Wal-Mart pretty cheap. If you can keep the humidity and bugs and mice out it should last over a year. | |

| Wild Dove, Don't ask me how I know this, but yes Hydroponics does work exceptionally well. In my early 20's, I was an expert in using this method for growing what a higher power placed here as a weed.
You can use this method to grow about anything you want, given legalities and the size constraints of the items you want to grow.

| Spring, This is and always was my take on what life is all about, Take each day that you are blessed with and use it up to the last second. For we are here to learn and experiance all that we can soak up, for however long are stay. Greet each new day with optimism, hoping for the best. If the best does not come your way, make the best of it, without giving into defeat. We all play a significant roll in life and as always, in life there is death, and in death come's life. I have chosen a path that has always been exciting, and never a dull moment. And as always, there will be people that will deny the storm while standing in the middle of it. I will be there to help in any way that I can. | |

| Great list LittleFire, I have number 7 covered for a small army. Try replacing the generators which take gas with solar generators, easy to make, photo cells, Car batterys and an inverter. I personally replaced the matches with Bic lighters, every time I see them on sale I buy about five packages of five. This is a great list, thank you. | |
