CANYON LAKE, Texas - Geologic time has a different meaning when it comes to Canyon Lake Gorge. You could say it dates to around the end of the Enron era.

interesting!!! CanyonGorge

A torrent of water from an overflowing lake sliced open the earth in 2002, exposing rock formations, fossils and even dinosaur footprints in just three days. Since then, the canyon has been accessible only to researchers to protect it from vandals, but on Saturday it opens to its first public tour.
"It exposed these rocks so quickly and it dug so deeply, there wasn't a blade of grass or a layer of algae," said Bill Ward, a retired geology professor from the University of New Orleans who started cataloging the gorge almost immediately after the flood.
The mile-and-a-half-long gorge, up to 80 feet deep, was dug out from what had been a nondescript valley covered in mesquite and oak trees. It sits behind a spillway built as a safety valve for Canyon Lake, a popular recreation spot in the Texas Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin.
The reservoir was built in the 1960s to prevent flash flooding along the Guadalupe River and to assure the water supply for central Texas. The spillway had never been overrun until July 4, 2002, when 70,000 cubic feet of water gushed downhill toward the Guadalupe River for three days, scraping off vegetation and topsoil and leaving only limestone walls.
"Underneath us, it looks solid, but obviously it's not," said Tommie Streeter Rhoad of the Guadalupe Blanco River Authority, as she looked out over a cream-colored limestone crevasse.
The sudden exposure of such canyons is rare but not unprecedented. Flooding in Iowa in 1993 opened a limestone gorge behind a spillway at Corvalville Lake north of Iowa City, but that chasm, Devonian Fossil Gorge, is narrower and shallower than Canyon Lake Gorge.
Neither compares to the world's most famous canyon. It took water around 5 million to 6 million years to carve the Grand Canyon, which plunges 6,000 feet at its deepest point and stretches 15 miles at its widest.
The more modest Canyon Lake Gorge still displays a fault line and rock formations carved by water that seeped down and bubbled up for millions of years before the flooding.
Some of the canyon's rocks are punched with holes like Swiss cheese, and the fossils of worms and other ancient wildlife are everywhere. The rocks, typical of the limestone buried throughout central Texas, date back "111 million years, plus or minus a few hundred thousand years," Ward said.
Six three-toed dinosaur footprints offer evidence of a two-legged carnivore strolling along the water. The footprints were temporarily covered with sand to protect them as workers reinforced the spillway, but they'll be uncovered again eventually, Rhoad said.
The Guadalupe Blanco River Authority, which has a lease from the Army Corps of Engineers to manage the 64-acre Canyon Lake Gorge site, will begin offering limited public tours of the canyon Saturday, continuing year-round on the first Saturday of the month.
Early demand for the 3-hour tours is so high they are booked for at least six months. Rhoad said the authority hopes to train more docents so dates can be added.
Visitors will not be allowed to hike the canyon on their own because the brittle limestone is still breaking from the canyon walls.
Construction on a rim trail to overlook the canyon begins this winter. Officials hope to eventually build lookout points and an educational center.

Wow Two, the man in the booth across from me at the antique show lives in Canyon Lake. What a coincidence that you would post this. He was a story all to himself, but I will explain that later. He claims to be one of the few that will survive the coming catastrophes and when I explain him to you it will become clear that he is probably right.

Okay I have to tell you about "Blue" the man from Canyon Lake. He is a sign maker. He uses his router and a sander to make signs on cedar and mesquite planks. They are absolutely beautiful, and he has the best handwriting I have ever seen. Who would have guessed? He is rough and tumble and hysterical. Blue can tell a joke and keep you laughing for hours.

Blue has tattoos all over his body, from his neck to his wrists to his ankles. He has Roy Rogers and Dale Evens very largely tattooed on his chest. He even has Trigger and Buttermilk, the horses. Most people are put off by his appearance, and demeanor, but I found him fascinating. I could listen to his stories forever.

Blue started out being a jeweler. He went to jewelry making school, but after a few years decided he didn't like the discipline it took for that kind of job. The creativity was there, but Blue dislikes structure. He then went on to be a clown in the circus, and even went to Spain with them. He told how he once put a flare in the back of his pants and lit it. He said the children were laughing like crazy, but he was running around trying to get it out because it was burning the crap out of him! In his off time he was a clown with the rodeo and said the bulls got to him on several occasions.

Blue slept in the smallest tent you have probably ever seen the entire time he was at the show. Over two weeks. It was barely big enough for him to get in there. He would get up every morning and start a fire to warm water to bathe and shave in a big wash tub. The cows would stand around and look at him like he was the most interesting person they had ever seen. They would snort when he bathed. It was funny. He made friends with them, and even named them. He ate almost all his food cold right out of cans, and never eats meat.

He also drives a truck that is about 20 years old, and has no license plate, insurance, inspection sticker or any of the required license to operate a vehicle. Blue drives all back roads and never ever hits the interstate.

Blue told me that he likes to stay below the radar of the government because of the visions he started having when he was very young. He said he has seen a government similar to the USSR, and he has seen some catastrophic changes for the climate and topography of the world, but especially the United States. I was sworn to secrecy not to tell his buddies about his visions. He does have a reputation to uphold you know!

Blue told me there will be few survivors when the changes get in full motion, but he believes he will be one of the few in his area. He has taught himself to be a survivalist in the worst conditions. He even sleeps outside in the rain. He said that all of us pansy asses will not be able to make it because the Holiday Inns and Shoneys will not be operating! HA HA

He loves his beer, but never puts any chemicals in his body in the form of drugs. Blue said he speaks to God through the spirit and he knows what he has to do in the coming times. He is ready and will be there to help the few remaining make it through. I believe he is right.

Blue is not married, but was married once for about 3 months. It was not for him. I asked him if he was lonely, and he told me there is a big difference between being lonely and being alone. He said you have to come to terms with yourself as a person in order to live alone for your entire life, and he said he does not mind being alone with his thoughts at all. He came to terms with that years ago. He went on to explain some esoteric knowledge about the spirit and the soul, but that is something I will write about later. It is quite fascinating.

He asked me not to take a picture of his face, but this one was okay. This is the very unique, interesting, and complex Blue from Canyon Lake:

An interesting story Spring,
He is correct when he say's that these comforts of home will not be there such as the Holiday Inn's. I will be one of the few that will survive such an event only to ask myself why in the end. Really we all are survivers, what will kill most is their reluctance to act fast enough because of the shock of it all. They will be fixated in this state of "I can't believe this is happining" instead of Oh Sh_t, I gotta stay calm, cool and collective and act now if I want to live through this situation. This Blue that you tell about reminds me of one of my homeless buddies, who preferes to be free and homeless.

Blue is not really homeless. He just likes to live in nature, but if he were homeless, which I am sure he has been on occasion, he is very self reliant.

Osiris most people shun the homeless, but most of them have had some very full lives and could tell some interesting tales if someone would listen.

You are right about the "I can't believe this is happening" factor. Most people will be stunned into an almost catatonic state and will be incapacitated by fear.
