| I'm back after a week in the dark and cold. I lost electricity last Sunday morning around 4 or 5 am and just got it back on last night. I also lost probably every tree on my property. There are tree limbs EVERYWHERE, I could probably build a 2 story house with them. I got home from work last night thrilled I had power again and then discoverd my hot water heater is leaking. It has something to do with the pressure release valve a worn seal or something. I have never been so glad to see a year end in my life. So, here are some tips in case of power outages. Get generator if you can, I don't have one, it would have been nice, and make sure you have plenty of gas for it. Get coleman camping stove, they aren't too expensive and you'll be able to heat water and soup. Have plenty of candles, flashlights matches and/or lighters. A battery operated radio would be good so you can hear the news. Kerosene or propane space heaters. All I had were candles, on the fifth day I bought a coleman stove and some flashlights. The milk stayed good in my refrigerator, it was that cold. I hope someone finds this useful. | |

| Wow, MID, I am so sorry to hear you had such an awful time of it! I feel for you. I'm glad your power is back now, it's so unbelievable the damage that storm did. I just counted it as training.
BTW, if you do have a generator or a propane heater, make sure there is adequate ventilation, several people here died from carbon monoxide poisoning and from gas poisoning. |

| MID I just got home and saw this post. Good grief. I hope you are well. If you need anything at all please let me know. How terrible.
I learned a very hard lesson about the generator with the hurricane. Another thing to remember is fuel for the generator. Once a storm or catastrophe hits very often you cannot obtain fuel for the generator, so it is a good idea to get some 5 gallon gas cans and keep them stocked. Just rotate them out, and keep refilling them.

| Thanks you all, I'm fine. I normally heat with electric space heaters anyway so, I'm used to be a little chilly in the winter. The house is VERY well insulated so it wasn't too bad. By the end of the week I had about had it though. I was a little concerned about Saturday night though if they hadn't gotten it back on. I had flannel sheets, 2 blankets, a comforter and a quilt on my bed plus the dogs and cats. I was worried my butt was gonna freeze to the toilet seat though!! :lol!: Like BTM said if you get a generator put it OUTSIDE, not in the garage. I hear of people dying every year from those things. I wouldn't mind having one. Also, Spring brought up a good point about the fuel. Gotta go for now. | |

| As of last night, there were still a few people without power in each of the 3 states, Okla., Mo., and Kansas. I'm sitting here waiting on my insurance adjuster, he'll be here in a few minutes I took pictures of the damage in my yard, after Iget them developed maybe someone can tell me how to post them. I got the thingy on my hot water heater fixed monday evening, my basement was like steam room! I hope Karen is right about 2008 being a lot better. She's been right about everything else, lets hope this isn't the first time she's wrong!! I' not sure how much more I can take. | |

| MID I am very serious. If there is anything I can do to help let me know. I am praying for you.
And be careful on that toilet seat! It would be horrendous if you had to call 911 because you were stuck to it. You might want to consider one of these. Maybe it will work with batteries: :laugh4:
