112-degree day gets us into the record book
John Faherty

Today is the day that allows us to tell our grandchildren that we were here in the summer of 2007.

The Valley of the Sun lived up to its name Wednesday, as locals sweltered through a record-setting 29th day of 110-plus degree heat. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport reported 112 at 3:45 p.m.

On Tuesday, we tied the record of 28 days, and the National Weather Service is predicting that we will get to 111 degrees today.

There will not be a parade.

Tony Haffer, chief meteorologist for the service, refused to add any hot air to current conditions when he mastered the art of understatement.

"This is an unusually hot spell," Haffer said.

A number of factors that could be making this a record year: One is the dreaded heat island, which means the afternoon heat never dissipates like it should in the desert.

This also has been a particularly dry year. Monsoon moisture keeps our temperatures down, but there has simply not been enough of it in 2007.
